Wonderful Lemon

The lemon is such a wonderful fruit… do you want to know why? Aside from it’s use for adding a little zest to all kinds of dishes, you can also use the lemon for medical, aesthetic, and hygenic purposes. Interested? Together let’s get to know the lemon.

The lemon comes from a small species of a flowering plant that is native in Asia. It contains 88% vitamins C which is good for a lot of things. It is also acidic in nature which makes it a good companion in geting rid of germs and molds.

Have you heard of lemon sugar cookies? If you haven’t here is a quick overview of how to make it. The total time of preparation is only for 22 minutes. You still have a lot of time left for other dishes, which is good if you are hosting a dinner. Here’s an original recipe from Robyn Stone.

So you will need:

– 1 cup or 2 sticks of softened butter

– 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar

– 1 egg

– 2 1/4 cups of flour

– 1/2 teaspoon of Losher salt

– 1 teaspoon of vanilla

– zest of two large lemons

– juice of one large lemon, about 1 tablespoon

– 1/4 cup of lemon sugar for rolling the cookies on

So here are the steps:

First, you will preheat the oven to 350*F… line with cookie sheets. In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar until the texture gets light and fluffy, for about 3 minutes. Then you will need to add egg and mix them well. And now its time to stir flour, baking soda, salt, vanilla, lemon zest, and lemon juice together. Leave it to rest for about 3 minutes. This will allow the lemon flavor to really sip into the mixture. Scoop a dough and roll it into a ball. Repeat until all the dough have been rolled. Finally, you can roll the dough in lemon sugar. Bake them for 10 to 20 minutes.

Enjoy your lemon sugar cookies!

TRIVIA: YOU CAN ALSO USE LEMON TO MARINATE YOUR FISH IN. How is this possible? It is due to the acidic nature of lemon which neutralizes the amines in the fish by converting them to nonvolatile ammonium. What’s the result? Tenderness.

Most people care about how they look. I sure do and I’m sure that you do too! You don’t have to look like those flawless Hollywood stars but being presentable is a must. The secret to looking good is by taking good care of your skin. Make up should help enhance your look but you shouldn’t be that dependent on make up, in my own opinion anyway.

How can lemon help you?

As I have mentioned above, lemon is rich in vitamin C. 88% of vitamin C and vitamin C is good for hastening healing. You can drink lemon juice to aid your body, and it also somehow helps get rid of cough and sore throat. I’m not sure if you’re already doing this but you can mix honey and lemon together in water to get rid of an incoming cold. You can also put a drop of honey on a slice of lemon and rub it against your skin to help get rid of scars or to simply make brighten your skin.

Speaking of scars, let me discuss more about that. Lemon has been long used to treat acne scars. Thanks to the acidic nature of lemon, it is easy for the fruit to get rid of dead skin or to “dissolve” the epidermis to make way for a new layer of skin. Some people cannot tolerate the sting of the lemon but I think it’s worth it. You don’t have to do it everyday. I believe every two or three days is fine so your skin can have a rest.

You can also add lemon to the water that you drink. I’m sure you’ve come across this idea before. Now is a good time to try it if you haven’t been doing it already. What are the benefits of doing this?

  • AIDS IN DIGESTION. Are you feeling a little constipated? Time to grab that lemon water! Yes, lemon helps aid in your digestion. It is because of the acidic nature of the lemon that allows it to give a hand in breaking down the food you have been consuming.
  • REDUCE INFLAMMATION AND FORMATION OF URIC ACID. Too much build up of uric acid in our kidneys can have an effect in our joints. Ever heard of gout? With just a glass of lemon water, you can help prevent this from happening.
  • IT HELPS CLEAN YOU – INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. There are some enzymes found in lemons which can stimulate your liver to excrete more waste than it normally does. Note that this can also give you clear skin and helps in preventing wrinkles too. Amazing right?

I guess the things I’ve said above can also count as medicinal benefits of lemon but let me add another one! Most people don’t know about this since most think that only bananas have the highest potassium levels but lemon has high potassium levels which can help in your defecation and it also helps regulate your heart function.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE MERE SCENT OF LEMON CAN HELP DRIVE AWAY THOSE NASTY MOSQUITOS? Mosquitos carry all type of diseases… one of which is the deadly dengue. It drops your platelet to dangerous levels which can make you have internal bleeding. In tropical countries, many children and also adults have died because of a simple mosquito bite.

Lemon truly is a wonder fuit! Don’t you agree? So the next time you head out to get some groceries, don’t forget to purchase some lemons! The cons to lemons is that they are a little more expensive compared to other fruits but they are worth it because of the so many benefits that you get from them. Before I forget, when you eat lemon or drink lemon water… be sure to brush your teeth immediately. The acidic nature of the lemon may be good for some things but it is certainly not good for your teeth as it can erode the enamel coating. Don’t forget!

  1. Thank you so much for this sweet or should I say sour little article on lemons. I love the use of lemon in cooking and cleaning. There is something about the smell that can be intoxicating. Don’t forget, you can use lemons to take off your freckles, if you recall from Jan tried it on the Brady Bunch. Awesome info!

    Take Care, Heather

    1. You are welcome. Lemons works great with cleaning and I like the smell of it. I do not why but the smell is intoxicating but it is so close to the smell of oranges lol. I love oranges! I was not aware that lemons can take freckles off of your face. That is interesting.

You take care as well Heather.

  2. I did not know that lemons was so important, I think now I have to include it in my diet. I thought it was not good for the stomach because it is very acid. I think we have a bad concept of lemons. It’s very helpful and thank you for the good information.

    1. You are welcome. Lemons are misunderstood because they are sour. Even though they are sour they should be included in your diet even if you just have some lemonade every now and then.

  3. What an education I have received here today by reading your article. Never imagined that lemons were such good “friends!” So many uses and so good for our health.
Lemons will definitely be on the shelf in my refrigerator from here on in and I am going to subscribe to your site for sure.
Many thanks for all this very useful and eye-opening article.
